Equality is about promoting and fostering everybody’s right to be different. It’s about being free from discrimination, being valued and having a choice and dignity. It is interesting to see that the term “diversity” appears almost everywhere. There was a time in the 1990’s where the term “equal opportunity” or “equal employment opportunities” were prefered, but no longer does this seem to be the case. Diversity is now prefered instead, meaning difference or heterogeneity. Therefore, diversity is more than equality. Diversity is creating a culture which values individual differences and variety for the benefit of the society, individual and the organization. Previously in a workplace, diversity has traditionally been considered as demographic differences, however, in the more recent times it is taken to encompass personality and skill difference.
A diverse organization ensures that people who work within and for the organization are represented as the wider society; a mix of people who make the organization unique. A mix here meaning different age, disability, gender, race, marriage/civil partnership, religion, nationality etc.
